AGM March 31st 2007
The organisers were caught out by the large turnout for the 2007 AGM in Filey. Frantic efforts
had to be made to find extra chairs, and even so, window ledges, tables, and the floor were used to provide additional seating.
Members and locals were treated to an excellent talk on Filey fishing industry, now only a
shadow of what it once was. JIM HAXBY was a fisherman most of his life, and touched on many aspects of the trade, including
the hard working womenfolk such as the 'flither girls' who collected bait for their menfolk.
He was followed by local historian MICHAEL FEARON, who gave a potted history of the resort,
including details of local pirates, and spoke of the unrealised plans for Filey harbour.
Finally, Professor JOHN WIDDOWSON played extracts from cassette tapes of local people which
had been recorded some fifty years previously.
The highly successful meeting led to requests from locals for the Society to visit
Filey again soon.
MARKET WEIGHTON 8th July 2006
There was
a good turn-out for the summer meeting of the YDS in the Community Hall at Market Weight. Jill Crowther of Hull Library, gave a fascinating talk on the life and works of Yorkshire authoress,
Winifred Holtby. Born in 1898, her best known novel is the critically-acclaimed ‘South Riding’, but sadly she died in 1935 before its publication. Jill also brought along a wealth of rare photographs from
the Holtby Collection.
HELMSLEY Sat 14 Oct 2006
Our autumn meeting was held in this
attractive market town, and featured an afternoon of North Riding nostalgia.
YDS Hon. Secretary Mike Park opened proceedings
by recalling his days as a teenager in Beadlam, the next village along the A170. He read out examples of his published
work on the subject.
Guest speaker was Doreen Wardle from Harome,
who gave a hilarious talk about the trials and tribulations - and the advantages - of being a woman in a small village.
She detailed each day's tasks, painting a delightful picture of a simpler and seemingly far more fulfilling lifestyle
than that of today.
CHRISTMAS CRACK 2006 was held at Acomb on December
2nd, with Council member Paul Dunn assembling an impressive team of readers from all three Ridings.
Subjects covered were varied, though mainly associated with
the festive season, and an extremely entertaining afternoon concluded with a rousing rendition of 'While Shepherds Watched'
sung to the tune more usually associated with 'Ilkley Moor Baht 'At'.
